Dr Victor Nian is a firm believer in equitable energy transition. He is well known for his quote on "energy transition is not just about where we are transition to, a fossil dominated global economy. This is important because sustainability is about balancing the triple bottom line of people-planet-profit."
Dr Victor Nian believes in the need for enabling ecosystems to empower innovative technologies and solutions and accelerate global energy transition in an equitable manner. Dr Nian brings onboard a suite of expertise in energy transition and sustainable development, especially in long-term scenario planning, industrial economy and infrastructure development, digital transformation of energy systems, national energy policy and strategy, technology transfer and commercialisation, and net-zero and ESG strategies. He is advisor to several public and private organisations across Asia. He is recognised as one of the go-to-persons on energy and sustainability related issues in Southeast Asia.
With his technical background in energy modelling and nuclear energy, and a special interest in artificial intelligence (AI), Dr Nian saw the need for introducing fundamental knowledge beyond data to training AI if the world is serious about building the next level of "smarter economy". The Applied Micro Systems (AMS) was set up to serve the exact purpose. Starting with building energy modelling, Dr Nian has developed a suite of modelling tools with his international team of experts to cater to the needs of different economic sectors. These then serve as the foundation for AMS to begin transforming those modelling tools into lecture halls and laboratories for training AI.
In the spirit of “research and innovation without borders”, Dr Nian established a virtual laboratory, entitled UNiLAB on Integrated Systems Analysis Tools, hosting an international network of experts from more than 15 countries and organisations. Later on, this virtual laboratory evolved into a reputable independent "think-and-do tank", Centre for Strategic Energy and Resources focusing on strategic issues in energy transition and sustainability. He is a Founding Member and elected Council Member of the International Society for Energy Transition Studies, a non-profit organisation with more than 500 members from over 50 countries.
Dr Nian holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and a BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering with a Minor in Management of Technology, all from the National University of Singapore. Dr Nian was the first scholar from the National University of Singapore to publish independent studies in academic journals on nuclear energy related topics.
